Without having gained true spiritual knowledge, we cannot even perform any devotional practice, let alone God-realisation! Instead, we continue to indulge in fallacious reasoning with our mind still full of doubts and apprehensions and spend our entire life in meaningless pursuits. In so doing, we allow this human body to go to waste. Any devotional practice that we perform would not benefit us because of our lack of proper or adequate understanding. We would be limited to performing the external acts of doing japa (repetition of some Deity’s name or Vedic hymns), pattha (recitation of passages from scriptures), puja (ritualistic worship) or going on pilgrimage.
